How to Convert a PDF to an Audiobook for Free

Why turn a PDF into an audiobook?
Course readers, textbooks, reports, public domain novels, long whitepapers: a lot of what we need to read only comes as a PDF. On a screen, that gets tiring fast. Once you convert the PDF to an audiobook, you can listen on your commute, at the gym or while cooking, and give your eyes a break.
Audiobook Maker converts a PDF into an audiobook for free, right in your browser. You upload the file, pick a natural-sounding voice and download an MP3 or M4B with chapters. You don't need to install software or create an account.
How to convert a PDF to an audiobook, step by step
- Upload the PDF: drag the file onto the upload area (up to 50 MB). The text is extracted and split into chapters.
- Review the chapters: you see each detected chapter with its title and length. Untick the table of contents, copyright page or bibliography.
- Choose a voice: more than 400 neural voices in 50+ languages, including several English accents (US, UK, Australian, Indian and more). Play the short preview to check tone and pace first.
- Pick the output format: MP3 as one file or a ZIP with one file per chapter, M4B with chapter markers and cover, or a private podcast feed.
- Generate and download: a progress bar shows how far along it is. For long documents, ask for an email notification and close the page in the meantime.
What gets cleaned up before narration
A PDF is designed for print, not for listening. A basic screen reader therefore reads every running header, page number and footnote aloud. Audiobook Maker prepares the text before it reaches the voice:
- Running headers and footers that repeat across pages (book title, chapter name, publisher) are detected and removed.
- Page numbers and footnotes no longer interrupt the flow.
- Words hyphenated across lines are joined back together, so the voice doesn't stumble over half-words.
- Figure and table captions, indexes, URLs, ISBN and DOI references are skipped.
- Text in brackets is not read by default. Turn it back on in the advanced options if you need it.
How chapters are detected
To avoid one endless audio file, the tool looks for the document's structure, in this order:
- the PDF's bookmarks, if it has any (the most reliable source),
- headings, recognised by a larger font than the body text,
- a table of contents page with page numbers,
- otherwise, the whole document is read as a single chapter.
Tip: if the book is also available as an EPUB, use the EPUB. Chapters and paragraphs are marked up cleanly there, and the result is usually even better. See the EPUB to audiobook guide.
PDF to MP3 or PDF to M4B?
MP3 plays on every phone, car stereo and computer. For a paper or a short document, it's the simplest choice.
M4B is the classic audiobook format: a single file with chapter markers, cover art and resume position. Apple Books and most audiobook apps let you jump straight to the next chapter. For whole books, M4B is worth it. Read more in the M4B format guide.
Good uses for a PDF audiobook
- Studying: listen to lecture notes, readers and set texts, and review them on the go.
- Work: get through reports, studies and manuals on your way in.
- Dyslexia or low vision: listening takes the strain off, and with MP3 you can rewind as often as you like.
- Classics: public domain works are free to download as PDF or EPUB. Our list of free ebook sites shows where to find them legally.
Scanned PDFs: run OCR first
Some PDFs are only images, such as scanned books or photographed pages. There is no text inside for a voice to read. Audiobook Maker tells you so when you upload. Run the document through text recognition (OCR) first, for example by opening the PDF with Google Docs in Google Drive, then upload the version with the recognised text.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn a PDF into an audiobook for free?
Yes. With the Standard voices the conversion is free, with no account and nothing to install. A generous monthly allowance applies, enough for many books.
Do the voices sound natural?
They are neural voices that phrase whole sentences rather than reading word by word. Listen to the preview of two or three voices before generating the whole document.
How long does the conversion take?
It depends on the amount of text. An article is ready in a few minutes, and a 300-page book usually takes under an hour. You don't have to wait: processing continues on the server even if you close the page.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. You download the finished MP3 or M4B straight to the device.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
Only if you remove the protection first and are entitled to do so. The tool only reads the text that the PDF makes available.
Can it read PDFs in other languages?
Yes. There are voices in more than 50 languages, so a German textbook gets a German voice and a French novel a French one. More on voices in the text-to-speech audiobook guide.
